Telegraph Avenue
When ex-NFL quarterback Gibson Goode, the fourth-richest black man in America, announces plans to construct his latest Dogpile megastore on a nearby neglected stretch of Telegraph Avenue, Nat and Archy fear it means certain doom for their vulnerable little enterprise.

Leiber, Fritz: Reason:  Fritz Leiber offers swashbuckling adventure that mixes lots of sword play, fascinating characters, and clever repartee with an undercurrent of introspection and character development here that Chabon fans should enjoy. -- Katherine Johnson

Lethem, Jonathan:  Reason:  Lethem and Chabon write novels, short stories and essays, and share an interest in comics, popular culture, and using genre elements in Literary Fiction. They explore troubled artist and coming-of-age themes; Chabon also adds the perspective of the Jewish experience. Their well-crafted prose, replete with word play, evokes the setting. -- Katherine Johnson

Russo, Richard:  Reason:  Exploring men's lives and more in a fictional setting is a common theme for Pulitzer winners Michael Chabon and Richard Russo. The skillful dialog, community of characters, stalled lives and relationships, skewering of academia, and humor mixed with tenderness toward their characters should please fans of both, Chabon's nonfiction included.

White teeth by Zadie Smith
Reason:  With their vibrant urban settings, multicultural ensemble casts, and complex relationship dynamics, these humorous, character-driven novels feature several generations of two interconnected families as they explore -- with a keen satirical eye -- issues of race, class, politics, and culture. -- Gillian Speace

Zelazny, Roger:  Reason:  Roger Zelazny, although primarily a Science Fiction and Fantasy writer, plays with characters and ideas, offering superheroes who aren't always heroic, and mythic and literary allusions for readers to unravel. -- Krista Biggs
